In this video Kyle Kulinski clearly establishes himself as a serious political philosopher, and not just another talking head on social media. Kulinski calls out Dr. Jordan Peterson, one of the leading voices of conservatism in today’s topsy-turvey world. I share Kulinski’s admiration for Dr. Peterson, especially his profound insight into human nature.

I also share Kulinski’s view that Jordan Peterson is off base in his antipathy toward change … but only a little bit. Peterson’s position is too extreme. In this short video clip Peterson is unrelenting, claiming that change for the sake of improving man’s lot (the betterment of mankind, if you will) is always detrimental and counter-productive. In his view change is always bad. As Kulinski astutely points out, Peterson’s intolerance to change through political activism, adhering instead solely to tradition — to a fabled good old days, so to speak — is naive.

From a volume of the Interviews With Mr. X, a fabled politician who rose to prominence in the 1980s, as America was just entering its downward spiral into political chaos ….

Mr. X [responding to a reporter’s question]: “So, are you saying that we should eschew new ideas that just might work, in favor of tired old ideas that have proven not to work?”

Peterson is wrong in his assumption that traditional ideas are inherently the best route and that change is always bad. This is small minded thinking. This denies the reality of the progress that mankind has made — and hopefully will continue to make — towards a better world. It is our duty to do what we can to try to make the world a better place.

Not to do so would be to shirk our responsibility as human beings. Peterson is a proponent of personal responsibility. We, as social animals, have a responsibility not just to ourselves (a central tenet underpinning the conservative worldview) but we also have a responsibility to all other human beings. Love of thy neighbor is central to the Christian worldview. Peterson recognizes the importance of Christian values as the linchpin of human society. We must always keep in mind that Christian values are traditional values based on reality — objective reality, not reality as we interpret (or imagine) it.

We need to explore the subject of social change with an open mind. Let’s take a closer look at what these two men have to say about it.
